How to read Hieroglyphs
by M Collier and B Manley

This is an extremely useful book with a good general coverage of Egyptian grammer and vocabulary. The study excercises are very effective for practicing your translation skills. However, the authors have reassigned the reference numbers for each hieroglyph instead of using the more familiar references attricuted by Gardiners, making it a little harder to use in conjunction with other texts.

This work is a good overview of Middle Egyptian which is used as a general textbook for students of Egyptology. This book is required reading for any serious student of hieroglyphs.

Kemps's book is interesting and easy to read, but a little limited in scope. However, it is a good taster for those with a general interest in the language.

Egyptian Grammar
by Alan Gardiner

Gardiner's book on grammer is a must for anyone who plans a serious study of hieroglyphs. It is fairly dense, and not for the inexperienced.

by R.O Faulkner

Faulkner's dictionary is very useful, but hard to use unless you are fairly well practiced at translation.
