Herodotus on Darius

Darius (son of Hystaspes) became king after Cambyses. He married Cyrus’ daughters Atossa (who had been married to Cambyses) and Artystone, and married the daughter of Smerdis (named Parmys) in order to unify the Persian kingdom under his rule.
